Jaisalmer Introduction
Jaisalmer is one of the most popular destinations in India. Rising from the heart of the Thar Desert like a golden fantasy, the city of Jaisalmer is a great place to simply wander. The city is situated on the border of India and Pakistan in West Rajasthan. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert. Jaisalmer is named after its founder Rawal Jaisal. "Jaisalmer" means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal".
Famous as the Golden City, Jaisalmer has interested legends associated with it. According to legends, Lord Krishna – the head of the Yadav Clan, foretold Arjuna that a remote descendent of the Yadav Clan would built his kingdom atop the Trikuta Hill. His prophecy was fulfilled in 1156 A.D. when Rawal Jaisal, a descendent of the Yadav Clan and a Bhatti Rajput, abandoned his fort at Lodurva and founded a new capital - Jaisalmer, perched on the Trikuta Hill.
Places to Visit in Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer Fort : The golden hued fort is situated on the Trikutta Hill. This fort was built by the Rajput ruler in 1156. This is a living fort and about a quarter of city's population still lives inside the fort. The main attractions inside the fort are: Raj Mahal (Royal palace), Jain temples and the Laxminath temple.
Manak Chowk and Havelis : A main marketplace outside the fort leads to the narrow lanes dotted with famous havelis.
Gadsisar Lake : A scenic rain water lake with numerous beautiful shrines around and a spectacular avian variety. The lake is a pleasant spot for outings.
Nathmal-ji-ki-Haveli : It was built by a Prime Minister of princely state of Jaisalmer. Its frontage is a riot of ornamentation: flowers, birds, elephants, soldiers, a bicycle and even a steam engine.
Patwon-ki-Haveli : The most elaborate and magnificent of all the Jaisalmer havelis, this Haveli was built by Guman Chand Patwa (and later by his five sons), a wealthy merchant and banker who had over three hundred trading centres from Afghanistan to China. It has exquisitely carved pillars and extensive corridors and chambers. One of the apartments of this five storey high haveli is painted with beautiful murals. Fifty years were taken to complete this ornate five-storey complex. This is the largest, the most magnificent, and the most elaborate of Jaisalmer havelis.
Salim Singh-ki-Haveli : This 300 year old haveli of Jaisalmer's Prime Minister Maharaja Rawal Gaj Singh-Salim Singh has a beautiful blue cupola roof with superbly carved brackets in the form of peacocks.
