Udaipur Information

Founded by Maharaja Udai Singh II in the city of dawn – Udaipur is a lovely land around the azure water lake in the Indian State of Rajasthan.  Hemmed in by the lush hills of the Aravallis, Udaipur is one of the most attractive and romantic spots in India. So, the city is also called as the Romantic City.  One of the most romantic cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is also known as the city of lakes.

Its gleaming silver lakes and fairy tale palaces, sparkling fountains and lush green gardens are unforgettable – evoking a wistful mood of old-world romance and nostalgia.

A gem in the valley, ringed by lush green hills and blessed with blue water lakes, this city is also known as the Venice of the East.

Also known as the lovely lake side capital of the region Mewar, the City of Udaipur has many legends associated with it. According to legends, Maharaja Udai Singh II laid the foundation of this picturesque city in 1559 on the advice of a sage.

Situated on the banks of the lovely Pichola Lake and the Fatehsagar Lake, this royal city is dotted with many magnificient palaces, forts, temples, gardens and many more which draw a large number of tourists to the city.

Places to visit in Udaipur

City Palace : Standing on the bank of Lake Pichola, are massive series of palaces built at different time commencing from 1559 A.D. The balconies of the palace provide panoramic view of "Jag Niwas” (Now world wide famous Lake palace hotel), Jag Mandir on one side and on the other the city of Udaipur.

Pratap Memorial : Atop the Moti Magri or Pearl Hill, overlooking the Fateh Sagar Lake is the memorial of the Rajput hero Maharana Pratap with a bronze statue of the Maharana astride his favourite horse "Chetak".

Sajjan Garh : It offers a panoramic overview of the city's lakes, palaces and the surrounding countryside.

Gulab Bagh : It is a spectacular rose garden laid out by Maharana Sajjan Singh. There is a library in the garden which has a rare collection of ancient handwritten manuscripts and books.

Pichola Lake : Pichola Lake is the beautiful expanse of water that surrounds the islands of the Lake Palace Hotel (JAG NIWAS) and JAG MANDIR.

Fateh Sagar Lake and Neharu Park : A beautiful lake, overlooked by a number of hills on the three sides and the Pratap Memorial on the north was built by Maharana Fateh Singh. In the middle of the lake is Nehru Park - a lovely garden island with a boat shaped cafe accessible by an enjoyable boat ride.

Jagdish Temple : This magnificient temple is the largest and the most beautiful temple of Udaipur with noteworthy images. It was built in 1651 A.D. by Maharana Jagat Singh.
 
Saheliyon-Ki-Bari : This small ornamental garden was a popular relaxing spot where royal ladies came for a stroll and hence the name. The garden has many fountains in its four delightful pools, chiseled kiosks and marble elephants.

How to reach in Udaipur
In term of connectivity, the city of Udaipur is accessible by all means of transport.
By Air :
The Dabok Airport of Udaipur regularly receives direct flights from major cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Mumbai. The airport is located at a distance of 25 km from the city centre.
By Train :
Udaipur is directly linked by rail with major cities some important train connection are: 9643 Express (Delhi Sarai Rohilla – Jaipur – Ajmer – Chittaurgarh - Udaipur.)
By Road :
A wide network of bus service link Udaipur with several destinations. The National Highway 8 links Udaipur to Delhi as well as Mumbai. There are numerous buses playing on this route, which can also connect other regional centres like Agra, Ahmedabad and few other cities of Rajasthan.
